London, I’m ashamed of you

In Boris Johnson, one of the most vibrantly multi-cultural cities in the world just elected a man who calls black children “picaninnies”, is a right-winger in a clown’s costume and who is noted for his patronising contempt for anyone outside of his own class (old Etonian, Oxbridge…). And our intelligence as voters.

Well, I have to agree with his last point of view.

We’re heading out of the country for a week. When we get back, we should really think about moving.

  1. I’m shocked. What was the voter turn-out? Was it that apathetic? For all his madness, Ken Livingstone was better equipped to represent the London of today.

  2. I’ve been watching from afar - it did seem more interesting an election than our local choices. I’m afraid the Australian who ran his campaign did far too good a job - stopping him from saying too many of those things during the actual campaign. You have my sympathy (although the longer I watch politics, the more convinced I am that term limits on any incumbent are a good thing - after a while, you just become convinced you have all the answers).

  3. How appalling. Of course we have more than our share of appalling politicians over here as well…

  4. I think our insanity vis a vis elected officials has jumped the pond. My condolences.

  5. This is so demoralizing and terribly upsetting. I am ashamed too. Very bad!

  6. Hey all. Yeah, we flew off to France for a week (I’m here now with limited internet conectivity) with me in a very depressed mood. Still too down-hearted to blog. Really considering what it would be like o move out of London. Only comforting thing is the vast gulf between how well Ken did and the melt-down elsewhere for Labour. Johnson won on votes against Labour, not for him. And Livingstone would probably have won had he not re-entered the Labour party. Funny that.

  7. My god, he used those words in a written piece? The man’s a political idiot! Even if he meant the piece to be humorous or sarcastic or whatever….he’s an IDIOT!

When Bushie was reelected, we looked with fondness on certain Scandinavian countries as a new home. If McCain gets elected, we’re buying one-way tickets.

  8. I’m sorry, and definitely, a “need to vomit.” Strange how this stuff continues to make our world so toxic and we never learn.

I’m nervous about our own election… it could get ugly.

  9. Human nature never ceases to amaze me. Here in the US, we had four horrific years with Bush after he was “appointed” and damn if there wasn’t enough idiots to vote him in for a second term!
Is the general public brain dead? I wonder sometimes and (like you) want to run away…

  10. Thanks for the sympathy!

Well, we’re back from France and London’s still standing…Two highly over-excited children who don’t want to sleep and hotter weather than when we left…
