Pirate Dudelet, swords and flowers
Dudelet went to a fancy dress birthday party on Sunday. He made a formidable pirate in the Errol Flynn mode - black t-shirt (with a skull and cross-bones), black baggy trousers, black bandanna, black eye-patch (with another skull-and-cross-bone) and a wickedly curved scimitar with a gold handle. And a hook!
“Ahoy, me hearties,” he yelled, waving his sword. “Grrrrr!”
At the party (supermum told me) he won a game of musical statues. The party entertainer had two balloon sculpture prizes ready for him and a little girl dressed as a fairy. Or something. The party invitation had been covered in fairies, at any rate. Dudelet, however, was about to head off-piste in terms of performative gender.
“Well done!” the entertainer said. “Would you like a pirate sword or a flower?”
“A flower.”
“Ha ha ha!” laughs the entertainer. “No really, would you like a pirate sword or a flower?”
“A flower, please.” I can imagine dudelet’s ‘patient’ voice at this point. I can also imagine the entertainer wishing he’d spent more time practicing doing flowers.
“How about a pirate sword that’s got a flower added?”
“No thank you.”
The girl, however, stays on script.
“Pirate sword or flower?”
“Flower.” So the entertainer finally has to make another flower. It’s in front of me now, made out of one yellow and one green balloon and looks vaguely like a sausage dog. Dudelet is very proud of it. As he should be. And I’m very proud of him.

Something tells me that balloon entertainer needs to take some gender studies classes. I notice that dudelet is very polite! I’m not sure if my son would pick the sword or the flower…both would probably appeal to him. Maybe he’s transgendered? : )
This is so spooky - Ray dressed up as a pirate last week for a party! I’ll email you his photo :)
He wanted a flower? How sweet!
Hurrah for dudelet.
Coincidentally I was pretending to be a pirate on sunday.
Thanks for the comment and yes, apparently Eckhart did say that.
You’re welcome for the link. I’m glad your ‘experiment’ turned into such a passion, it shines through in your posts which makes them a joy to read.
Hey - Dudelet can be extraordinarily polite. Even to us! Achelois and Dan - there’s evidently a planetary alignment going on over Europe and Arabia of some kind.
Michelle - thank you! And thanks for visiting.

Patience, indeed. As I was reading the post, I was thinking his intentions were to bring the flower to his Mum or his new sis.
Gotta love that boy.
