Yogamum’s confessions of a blogger

Yogamum didn’t write this as a meme but I’m adopting it and changing her confessions into questions – it was too good an opportunity for introspection to miss (”It’s all about me! ME!”). Hope she’s feeling tolerant…

Ten Blogging Confessions

1. Do you promote your blog?
Not this one – my work-related blog is kind of promoted passively in that I’ll use the url all over the place. But I’ll only comment on posts that interest me.

2. How often do you check hits?
Ah – can I take the fifth on that? At least daily. I don’t know why – they oscillate wildly between 50 and a 100 for no apparent reason.

3. Do you stick to one main topic?
No. Definitely not. Though parenthood is a recurring theme. And music.

4. Who knows you have a blog?
Work blog? That’s open to the world but I try and keep a Chinese wall between it and Relaxed Parents. A few regular readers have my email, one or two friends and family members but it’s moderately anonymised.

5. How many blogs do you read?
I’m subscribed to about 150 blogs but I don’t read most of them everyday – many of the tech news blogs post dozens of stories. Also, I read a lot blogs linked to from within stories. For Relaxed Parents, I tend to catch up with those I think of as my regular circle once or twice a week.

6. Are you a fast reader?
Oh yes.

7. Do you customise you blog or do anything technical?
No. There’s some basic HTML in the text boxes but as it’s a WordPress hosted blog, there isn’t much call for anything complicated.
8. Do you blog anonymously?
On Relaxed Parents, yes. I really couldn’t have written as frankly about (say) the death of my father if I’d been using my ‘real world’ identity.

9. To what extent do you censor yourself?
A lot! But more on the work blog than Relaxed Parents. One area is that to date, I’ve never published identifiable pictures of my family.

10. The best thing about blogging?
Exactly the same as Yogamum. “Connecting with people all around the world, whom I would never have met otherwise.”

I’m not nominating anyone but I’d be fascinated to read anyone else’s thoughts on this.

  1. I might do this — it’s an interesting exercise in self-reflection. I will have to go through your archives and check out your Dad. That’s one I haven’t had to face yet.
One more thing about blogging that non-blogger might be surprised to know — It really surprises me how much time it takes.

  2. It is really interesting! Loved it.

  3. Hmm, never thought about the fact that you don’t post pictures. Maybe because I often read on bloglines, and not all photos show up that way.

  4. (un)relaxeddad — I like it when the pictures people post of their children are of their backs, or the sides of their faces. I think that’s clever. And, I was thinking — how long have you been blogging — this blog and others?

  5. Hey — wish I had thought of making this a meme! Good work!

I only show my kids in oblique angles — I am just leery of showing their faces.

  6. It does take time, doesn’t it?
Achelois, you should so do this!
Yeah – I don’t show pictures – though there have been occasions such as the picture of all of our feet which dudelet took. And no prizes for guessing who’s in the header graphic…
And I tried blogging for a short period of time seven years ago and couldn’t find time or traction. Then, a year ago, I was busy immersing myself in web 2.0 and thought “Let’s give this another go. And now look what happened! Something to reflect on later…

  7. I might do this too if tomorrow is saner than today. Now that Kiko is no longer a baby, I’ve stopped posting photos of his full face. It’s a bit of a shame that we have to be cautious though, isn’t it?

  8. I’ve done this over on my blog, if you’re interested. :)
