Dancing

Yesterday was a fairly idyllic day spent looking after dudelet again.  Today, I arrived back ready to go off to the yoga class I tried out last week and found dudelet playing up a lot and supermum at the end of her tether.  One of those days when dudelet was desperate for other children to play with but every mum she’d lined something up with blew out on them.  Which added up to no yoga!  Dudelet also wasn’t in a mood to go off to bed easily and all in all, I’m now not in a mood to do anything but whinge.

So instead, I’m going to reflect on half an hour we spent yesterday where, after supermum had gone off to work, dudelet and I danced to the National’s “The Boxer”.

We started off with slow, whirly circles to “Fake Empire”, a hypnotically lush piano-led waltz.  Then jumped frantically to “Mistaken For Strangers” and “Brainy” (uptempo but downmood at the same time).   “Slow Show”, with a briskly strummed guitar acoustic riff that would have adorned any of the best House of Love moments, saw outbreaks of freaky Goth hand dancing.  The hand dance also saw us through “Apartment Song” and “Start a War”.

“Who does the singer sound like?” I asked dudelet.

“Nick Cave,” he said.  I can see where he’s coming from.  It’s more Ian Curtis via Townes Van Zandt to me but Nick Cave works.   It’s a great record.  Everyone should buy it.
You can hear a complete (excellent) show here.  One of my favourite bands of the moment.

  1. Nick Cave … I love it. Though sometimes I wonder how dudelet’s musical taste will evolve when he’s a teenager!

  2. Supermum worries about that. I suspect I’ll have to pretend to intensely dislike whatever unimaginable new genre of music has yet to be invented. Or he’ll never forgive me.

  3. I think you should change your name to (very)hipmusicdad! I don’t recognize most of the singers/bands you talk about — I’m sooo uncool!!

  4. So nice that the two of you can share music. Let’s just hope you can continue to influence him for many, many years.

And I agree with yogamum: you are a hipmusicdad.

  5. Nick Cave, Ian Curtis, and Townes Van Zandt?

You had me at Nick Cave. I’ll check it out.

  6. Maybe I should change my nom de blog (only kidding!) I’d like to think (wistfully) that we’ll get to gigs together one day, him at the front in the mosh pit, me at the back with my ear plugs (and probably hearing aid by then).

LA Daddy, I’m utterly hooked on this band. Live, they’re completely without pretension – they come onstage, play the songs, leave. The drummer is great as well, in the Bill Berry mode.

  7. Very cool. Thanks for the show.

  8. [...] brought our attention to a little present. He danced with his little dudelet (picture it, and see the charm) to the National’s “The Boxer”. Do yourself a little favor, [...]
